If you’re the parent of a college kid (or you soon will be), once summer ends, school starts again. Because of this, September is Campus Safety Awareness Month, but I think every month should be because the statistics on campus violence, and sexual assault particularly, are pretty alarming. And, sexual violence isn’t the only safety issue college campuses face: there’s fire prevention, emergency response procedures during a catastrophic event, new occurrences like flash mobs and much, much more. So this week on Crime Prevention 101, I aim to raise awareness about campus safety issues and give suggestions about what can be done to make campuses safer. To help me out, I’ll be speaking with Robin Gray, Executive Editor of Campus Safety Magazine, about some of the safety issues that campuses need to address. Then I’ve got Alison Kiss from the amazing organization Security on Campus (which was founded by Howard and Constance Clery after their coed daughter Jeanne was murdered on campus) to talk about the very important Clery Act.
Then I want to formally introduce you to my new sponsor, MY FORCE, an innovative personal safety service for any smart phone that I bet you’re going to want for yourself AND for your college student. And, they’ve got a special offer for Crime Prevention 101 listeners.
Don’t forget to check out my campus safety tips (one for each day of the month) on my blog CrimePrevention101.com, or on my Twitter @crimeprevent101 and, of course, on my Facebook page: Susan Bartelstone.
