Radio Show Notes
Crime Prevention 101 is an award-winning, hour-long, magazine-format variety show, with an optimistic perspective on a very sober subject. We give life-saving information on subjects like preventing sexual assault; discuss legal trends like factors that sway juries; and lighten the mood with offbeat topics like prison coaching for white collar criminals. Show notes below.

- Crime Prevention 101 is on Vacation
Starting in January, Crime Prevention 101 (and me!) is going on a much needed vacation for a few months. As I was reflecting back at the end of the year, I was shocked to realize that it’s been almost four years that I’ve been doing this show!During that time, the show has grown and developed in ways I could never have anticipated when I started in 2008. I’ve met so many incredible guests (many who’ve become friends), and many others who’ve inspired me and taught me so much about the triumph of the human spirit under the most horrible circumstances imaginable.
WE WON AWARDS in 2011. Crime Prevention 101 was nominated for a US Attorney General’s National Crime Victims’ Service Award from the US Office for Victims of Crime. The show was also given a prestigious Leadership Award for our contribution in educating people about domestic violence by the amazing Violence Intervention Project, the only organization in New York City working with Spanish-speaking and immigrant victims of domestic violence. I’m so proud. And, on a personal note, I was honored for my work on the Board of Directors of the New York Women’s Agenda at a breakfast attended by 700 people. I was sitting on the dais behind Billie Jean King! How amazing is that!!!
THANK YOU. My greatest honor, however, has been the many emails and posts from my listeners over the years. I can’t possibly express my gratitude for your support over these four years. Know that it’s been my privilege helping you keep yourself safe! Please continue to post your comments on my Facebook page: Susan Bartelstone or email me: solutions@fightsafe.com. I’ll be checking them regularly and I answer ALL my messages.
My past radio shows are archived on my blog www.crimeprevention101.com. I post tons of safety tips and articles there on all sorts of crime prevention topics, so please use it as a resource.
Thanks also to my wonderful sponsors– MyForce and My Mobile Witness–two fabulous personal safety services for your smartphone. If you don’t know about them, please check them out. It’s been so rewarding working with you guys and I look forward to much more collaboration in 2012.
UNTIL CRIME PREVENTION 101 IS BACK ON THE AIR, STAY TUNED AND STAY SAFE!

Sad but true: two-thirds of ex-offenders relapse into crime within three years after they’ve been released from prison. Against heavy odds, however, some DO turn their lives around and this week, I’ll be speaking with some former bad guys who are not only law-abiding citizens but are inspiring other ex-cons to do the same. Spend some time with us and become hopeful.
Larry Lawton, convicted for armed robbery and extortion in 1996, who, after spending 11 years in some of the country’s toughest federal prisons, founded The Reality Check Program for at-risk kids that shows them what prison life is really like. He’s affected thousands of troubled lives so far.
Former drug abuser/dealer Randy Kearse, now the author of five motivational books based on his personal experiences, inspires other ex cons trying to go straight to find their own voice and transition back into society.
And, Ryan Holly from Defy Ventures, the organization founded by former Wall Street venture capitalist Catherine Rohr, stops by. Defy Ventures helps ex-cons with an entrepreneurial bent go into business for themselves. Based on the highly successful Prison Entrepreneurship Program in Texas, where over 600 ex-cons graduated with a recidivism rates of less than 10%. Defy Ventures also teaches good citizenship and family skills, provides business internships and even start-up capital to a lucky few!

For an optimistic perspective on a sober subject, this week Crime Prevention Specialist Susan Bartelstone speaks with two very courageous young women who’ve been the victims of terrible crimes–the kind that are the stuff of nightmares. But, they’ve survived and thrived and are now helping others do the same. Spend some time with us and be inspired!
Fifteen year old Jamie Isaacs endured years of bullying, starting at age 7, by more than 22 kids in her school. Today, she heads the Jamie Isaacs Foundation for Anti-Bullying that has already saved the lives of 8 kids.
Ten years ago, Alicia Kozakiewicz, then 13, became the victim of an Internet luring by a 38 year old man who imprisoned, raped and tortured her. Today, she’s a nationally-known crusader against child trafficking and pornography and started The Alicia Project to advocate for changes in the law.
Also, got travel safety tips for those who are going places and some great holiday gift suggestions with a crime prevention point of view for last minute shoppers.

- Susan on WBAI 99.5FM - Financial Literacy for Domestic Violence Survivors
Financial Literacy for Domestic Violence Survivors Radio Show
Hosted by Susan Bartelstone, Crime Prevention Specialist
Air Date: March 9, 2012, WBAI 99.5FM, http://wbai.org/
Special Programming for International Working Women’s Day
It can be almost impossible to leave an abusive relationship if you’re jobless, skill-less or lacking the economic resources to survive on one income instead of two–leaving you and your children trapped and financially dependent on an abuser. On March 9, 2012, I hosted a radio show on WBAI 99.5FM in New York City, on Financial Literacy for Domestic Violence Survivors, as part of a full day of special programming to commemorate International Working Women’s Day.
I hosted this program not only because I’m a crime prevention specialist who has dealt with domestic violence issues for more than 18 years, but also in my capacity as co-chair of the Domestic Violence Committee of the New York Women’s Agenda, a consortium of 100 women’s groups dedicated to fighting for women’s rights regarding equal pay, domestic violence and economic empowerment. Check us out at http://www.NYWA.org.
MY first guest was Denise Allen. Twenty years ago, she was the woman you read about in the newspapers: a wife and mother of two, abused and beaten for 10 years of marriage, who finally kicked out her husband and was left with pretty much nothing; not knowing where her next meal was coming from or how she was going to take care of her family. Today, she’s president of her own company, Allen Tax Services and she’s a Domestic Violence activist who works with organizations servicing survivors, helping them with tax preparation and economic survival strategies.
Next I spoke with Adria Schmidt, who runs the financial literacy courses for the Violence Intervention Program (VIP) in their Casa Sandra housing units and Yvette Perez who supervises was financial literacy courses in their shelter. The Violence Intervention Program is the only program in NYC that services Spanish-speaking and immigrant survivors (documented or undocumented) exclusively.
After the show, as Denise Allen and I were leaving the control booth, someone called in for one of the hotline numbers I gave out during the broadcast. It was an amazing moment for us because we knew someone was listening and taking our message to heart.

- SPECIAL ENCORE PRESENTATION: SHOPPING SAFETY & THE THRILLING DETECTIVE. Air Date: 11/30/11
What do Oprah Winfrey, Paris Hilton, Tiger Woods, Ted Turner and even Franklin Delano Roosevelt have in common? All these famous people (and many, many more) have had their identity stolen or been victims of credit card fraud.
Identity theft is a huge and growing problem and since November is the start of the holiday shopping season, beginning with Black Friday and then Cyber Monday, Crime Prevention Specialist Susan Bartelstone speaks with Paige (Pederson) Hanson from LifeLock, the identity theft prevention company, discussing what you can do to protect yourself from this scourge and what to do if you’ve been victimized.
Then, after you learn how to shop safely, she visits with Kevin Burton Smith from The Thrilling Detective website where you can shop for that person in your life who likes to read (and watch) good crime fiction.
But wait, there’s more: Be sure to stick around for her safety tips for shopping in malls with young children; and she’s got some great gift suggestions.

On November 24, 1971, a skyjacker and extortionist who became known as D. B. Cooper parachuted out of a Northwest airlines flight–and into infamy–somewhere over Ariel, WA with $200,000 of the airline’s money, never to be seen or heard from again. This case has intrigued law enforcement and amateur sleuths alike, including me, for more than 40 years, and tonight, I’m speaking with journalist Geoffrey Gray, author of Skyjack: The Hunt for D. B. Cooper, who was the first person to have access to confidential FBI case files on this most enduring of cold cases.
Also on the show, Tracy Hobson, Executive Director of the Center for Anti-Violence Education, a non-profit self defense organization, talking about what communities can do to keep people safe in these days of tight budgets and police cuts. Located in Brooklyn, NY, where there’s been a rash of gropings and attacks, they’ve stepped up and are doing free programs for the community. A model for what can be done everywhere.
And, you better start making out your holiday shopping list, because I’ve got lots of suggestions for personal safety products that will help keep your loved ones safe. - Domestic Violence in the Latino Community; Bullying Prevention; Legal Website Where Crime Pays! Air Date 10/19/11
Also available on iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/podcast/crime-prevention-101/id419406006
Domestic violence occurs in all cultures and on all socioeconomic levels, but Latino victims (overwhelmingly women) appear to be younger, poorer and less educated than other groups and a lot are undocumented immigrants. Formidable barriers exist that may discourage these women from seeking help despite severe abuse. Tonight, I speak with Cecilia Gastón from the Violence Intervention Project about what’s being done inNew York City to address these challenges; and this program is a model for what can be done in other communities.
Then, in addition to October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it’s also National Bullying Prevention Month, so my buddy Irene van der Zande, from the worldwide self defense organization Kidpower, drops by to give us bullying prevention tips for parents and kids.
Last, but not least, want to know where you might buy a $2,700 ruby ring for only $150 or a $700 electric guitar for $60 and it’s all legal? I’m going to tell you about PropertyRoom.com, a cool online auction site where you can get amazing deals on stolen, seized or forfeited property recovered by the police–and how crime really does pay!

With an estimated 4 million victims a year, it’s a good bet that domestic violence — and it’s devastating consequences to the women, men, children, relatives, friends and even co-workers of those involved — will touch the life of every single American at some point in time. And, it’s not just a problem here in the US, domestic violence has been called a worldwide epidemic! October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a good time to recommit to ending violence within our homes, our communities, our country and wherever in the world our message can reach.
This week, I spoke with Angela Watson from the Empire Education Group chain of cosmetology schools, which supports CUT IT OUT, a program that teaches hair salon professionals to recognize signs of domestic abuse in their clients and refer them to community resources. They have their own Empire Gives Back program which is doing amazing work supporting shelters all over the country. I also talked with Dr. Harrison Putman, plastic surgeon and Chairman of the Face To Face program of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. They’ve partnered with the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence to offer individuals who’ve been maimed by domestic violence free reconstructive surgery so they can look normal again.
Last up, Identity Theft expert Paige Hanson from LifeLock drops by to talk about October being National Cyber Security Awareness Month and how you can keep your personal information safe not just on your computer, but on your smart phone, tablets and any other electronic devices you use on the internet.

Also available on iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/podcast/crime-prevention-101/id419406006
Sherlock Holmes was using forensic science before we even HAD the word forensic. From Baskerville Hall to the Valleyof Fear, this week I’m exploring the real forensics behind the fictional detective’s greatest cases with crime-historian E. J. Wagner, Edgar award-winning author of The Science of Sherlock Holmes. Her book uses Holmes’s analytical techniques, including his use of fingerprints, early photography, trace evidence, autopsies and even zoology, as a jumping-off point to discuss the growth of forensic science during the 19th and early 20th century.
And, if you’re fascinated by TV shows like CSI and would like to explore your inner detective, I’ll also be talking with Janine Vaccarello from the Museum of Crime and Punishment inWashington,D.C., about their CSI Boot Camps where participants learn to how CSI experts process a crime scene by working hands-on to gather evidence.

Available on iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/podcast/crime-prevention-101/id419406006
If you’re the parent of a college kid (or you soon will be), once summer ends, school starts again. Because of this, September is Campus Safety Awareness Month, but I think every month should be because the statistics on campus violence, and sexual assault particularly, are pretty alarming. And, sexual violence isn’t the only safety issue college campuses face: there’s fire prevention, emergency response procedures during a catastrophic event, new occurrences like flash mobs and much, much more. So this week on Crime Prevention 101, I aim to raise awareness about campus safety issues and give suggestions about what can be done to make campuses safer. To help me out, I’ll be speaking with Robin Gray, Executive Editor of Campus Safety Magazine, about some of the safety issues that campuses need to address. Then I’ve got Alison Kiss from the amazing organization Security on Campus (which was founded by Howard and Constance Clery after their coed daughter Jeanne was murdered on campus) to talk about the very important Clery Act.
Then I want to formally introduce you to my new sponsor, MY FORCE, an innovative personal safety service for any smart phone that I bet you’re going to want for yourself AND for your college student. And, they’ve got a special offer for Crime Prevention 101 listeners.

- Sexting and Politicians: Why Do They Risk It All to Bare It All? Air Date 8/10/11
The only thing new about sexting is the word and the medium because people have been sending naked images of themselves to others in various ways for decades. Remember Polaroid instant cameras and photocopied butt cheeks!
Usually it’s teens and young adults who do it, but when NY Congressman Anthony Weiner’s political career petered out because he tweeted pictures of his wiener (one wiener joke is mandatory) to a young follower and NJ Congressman Louis Magazzu followed him down the same path, I just had to know the reason. So, this week I speak with eminent psychiatrist Charles Sophy about why politicians and powerful people risk it all to bare it all! Plus, he’s got tips for you parents to help you monitor your kids’ cell phone and computer behavior.

Continuing with my summer reading series, I’ve got multi-award winning crime novelist David Corbett, whose books have been described as lyrical, muscular, elegant and thrilling, to talk about his new book Do They Know I’m Running? and also about neighborhood watch programs–so important in these days of cuts to police departments.
Then, an old friend of Crime Prevnetion 101, security expert Todd Morris, from Brickhouse Security, stops by to tell you about some great personal safety products that’ll keep you up-to date on your kids texting and computer activities and help your home stay safe from burglars and home invasions (August is the prime month for burglaries).

Community Mobilizes to Find Missing Child! What YOUR Community Can Do. In mid-July, Lieby Kletzky, a sweet, trusting eight-year old, walking home alone from summer camp for the very first time, was abducted and murdered despite living in the tight-knit NYC Orthodox Jewish community of Borough Park, Brooklyn that’s regarded as extremely safe. New York City and people all around the world are shocked and grieving, so tonight on Crime Prevention 101, I’m talking with Rabbi Jack Meyer, of the NYPD’s Clergy Liaison Unit, who was part of the massive community effort that actually found the clues that led to the arrest of Lieby’s murderer in one day…and before the police did! Thousands mobilized to find this missing child and what they did in Borough Park is what we ALL want to do in our own communities should a child go missing!!! This is an amazing story.

What to Tell Children About a Tragedy and How to Tell Them. And, while we’re grieving for Lieby’s family, caring parents everywhere are grappling with the issue of how to tell their young children about traumas of this nature and the many others that occur as part of life. We don’t know how graphic and detailed we should be, especially when the details are horrific like in this case. So, up next I talk with Dr. Norman Blumenthal, the Bereavement Director for Chai Lifeline, an authority on what and how to tell your children about a traumatic event who’s been speaking all over New York City and the surrounding area since mid-July.

Independence vs. Safety: How to Raise Self-Sufficient Children in Difficult Times. And, parents are also struggling with how protective to be of our kids. How to let them grow up without smothering them with precautions. Last up, Irene van der Zande, from the fabulous Kidpower self defense organization, which has branches all over the US, drops by to talk about independence vs. safety and give us seven tips on how to prepare your youngsters to be self sufficient, unafraid and able to defend themselves from predators.

Preventing Burglaries: Alarms and Strategies. Are you dreaming of Disneyland? A luau on a lanai? Or, maybe just a long weekend getaway at the beach reading great books? Well, according to the FBI, while you’re at the beach or on vacation someone might very well be sizing up your home for a burglary. Since July and August particularly are the months when the most burglaries and property crimes take place, this week, I’m talking about home safety and the different types of alarm systems you want to know about with Bob Tucker from ADT Home Security. I’ve also got great burglary prevention tips for you such as the five best places to hide valuables that most burglars never think of and inexpensive psyche-out strategies that make burglars pause.

Death Row Diner. With the weather heating up, we’re taking another refreshing dip in the literary pool this week, starting with Ty Treadwell and Michelle Vernon whose fascination with the culinary cravings of condemned prisoners led to a delicious book called Last Suppers: Famous Final Meals from Death Row. As the authors say: Do you want fries with that execution?
True Tales of Mobsters, Gamblers, Hit Men and Drug Lords. I’m also speaking with Ron Chepesiuk, investigative journalist and award-winning author of 25 books, who tells us all about Sgt. Smack and some of the other infamous criminals he’s written about. He’s also the co-host of a radio show called Crime Beat which offers a front row seat to the comings and going of the Mob and the criminal underworld.

- Crime @ the Beach: Solving Your Summer Reading Dilemma: Air Date 6/29/11
Summer in the City. It’s summer and the weather is perfect for lounging on the beach with something great to read. This week, I’m getting ready for some serious down time but still don’t know what books to take with me. So, I’ve invited some of my favorite authors to come by and maybe they can help us ALL put our summer reading list together. It’s hot outside, so let’s take a refreshing dip in the LITERARY pool this week.
Mob Rules. First up, we’ve got former Mafioso Lou Ferrante who writes about the life of a mob soldier in Unlocked: The Life and Crimes of a Mafia Insider; and about how businessmen can learn lessons in doing business from the Mob in his new book, Mob Rules: What the Mafia Can Teach the Legitimate Businessman. Hmmmmm…

Devils and Saints. My next guest, Burl Barer, writes on his blog that he’s an Edgar Award winning author, an investigative journalist, a famous broadcaster and television star and well known in movie theaters worldwide–because he puts his feet on the seat in front of him. All true!
What impresses me particularly is that he writes both fiction and non-fiction; his books have been translated into seven languages; and he’s a NY Times best seller. He’s a recurring guest here on Crime Prevention 101 (kinda like a rash), but we always love having him on the show because we never know what he’s going to do or say. He’s also co-host of a true crime radio show, True Crime Uncensored, on OutlawRadio. Make sure to check out this insanity!
Written in Blood. Next I put some estrogen into the mix. Diane Fanning has written 10 true crime books, her latest the the best-selling MOMMY’S LITTLE GIRL about the Caylee Anthony murder case going on right now in Orlando, FL. She’s also written five mystery novels, including the very popular Lucinda Pierce series, and she’s been featured on every major TV show there is including 48 Hours and 20/20. I’m totally jealous and totally a fan.
Personal Safety Product. Got some tips about using wristbands on your young kids if you’re traveling on vacation or simply going to amusement parks or other entertainment spots.

- Cop Rape Case; Hotel Sexual Assault Case - & - Prison Book Program: Air Date 6/15/11
Cop Rape Case; Dominique Strauss-Klein Sexual Assault Case. The crime news is hotter than the temperature these days and rumors are flying like kites in the breeze, so on the show this week, I talk with my favorite defense attorney David McGruder about the so-called “Cop Rape Case” involving two police officers who were acquitted of raping a young fashion executive DESPITE being convicted of offenses that resulted in ruining their police career and being kicked off the police force. This acquittal makes no sense AT ALL so David breaks it down for me!
Also available as a podcast and on iTunes http://itunes.apple.com/podcast/crime-prevention-101/id419406006
Then David and I talk about the sexual assault case involving the powerful and influential former head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Klein, who’s accused of attacking a housekeeper at a very posh NYC hotel. Will this be a case of ATM (amnesia-through-money)? Lots of twists and turns here so be sure to stay tuned!
Prison Book Program. I’m always looking to present programs that are making a difference in the prison system, so I’m delighted to feature the Prison Book Program. Such a great idea. Wait til you hear about this AND how you can help.
Personal Safety Product. Got a neat personal safety product for you — a GPS Wristwatch/Cellphone that’s right out of Dick Tracy! Check out www.guardianlion.com

- Elder Abuse Awareness Day - & - Internet Safety Month - & - Child Abuse Case: Air Date 6/01/11
Spotlight on Elder Abuse. The US Senate Special Committee on Aging recently held hearings on elder abuse. A 90-year old man testified that his step-son withheld food and medicine from him and his wife, verbally abused them and terrorized them so severely that they were virtually prisoners in their own home. Shockingly, the man testifying was well known actor Mickey Rooney and experts estimate that millions of elder Americans are victims of abuse and neglect every year–many, many, many of them mentally impaired and unable to speak up for themselves.
Since June 17th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, I thought I’d talk with Sharon Merriman-Nai from the National Center on Elder Abuse about this scourge and what we can be do about it. Important topic.

I’m also chatting with another of my favorite guests: Former L.A. sex crimes prosecutor and nationally-known TV commentator Robin Sax drops by to speak about a child abuse case in FL she’s involved in where everyone seems to have dropped the ball. You’ve got to hear about this case; you won’t believe what happened.
SONY PlayStation Hacked. Then I chat with another frequent Crime Prevention 101 guest, Identity Theft Prevention Specialist Paige Hanson, from LifeLock, about the massive SONY Playstation hacking–called the largest security breach in history–which affected possibly up to 100 million subscribers–and we also talk about Internet Safety Month.
Personal Safety Products. Got two personal safety products I want to tell you about that I think merit a look-see: LoJack for Laptops from Absolute Software. Just like for cars! And, Let’s B Safe: A fun, rhyming book that helps parents teach vital safety rules to children about recognizing pedophiles and their lures. Designed to promote literacy at the same time. Plus: When McGruff the Crime Dog’s Safe Kids Total ID Program is presented in schools and childcare centers, the schools can earn free copies of Let’s B Safe for classroom libraries and a free all-school safety assembly on either predators, internet safety or bullying. - Commemorating Missing Children's Day 5/25/11: The Jennifer Kesse Story - & - Bonnie's Blog of Crime: Air date 5/18/11
Drew Kesse and the Jennifer Kesse Story. Jennifer Kesse was a beautiful, vibrant, 24-year-old when she vanished from her Orlando home on January 24, 2006. Despite numerous searches and years of police work, no arrests have been made and Jennifer has never been found. Since May 25th is National Missing Children’s Day, I’m taking a look at this topic on the show and I’ll be speaking with Drew Kesse, Jennifer’s father, who said that even if the Florida police and the FBI have given up hope, he never will and he’s never stopped searching. He’s now an influential activist for missing children and be sure to check out his website because it has lots of resources for those families in a similar situation (http://www.kesseonline.com).

Finding the Missing. Drew Kesse and I will also be talking about a controversial proposal sent to me by a fellow who claims that the US possesses — RIGHT NOW — the satellite technology that would watch us all 24/7 to find any missing person and solve most crimes. Hmmm…what could go wrong with that!!! I love the idea of finding the missing; but at what cost? Should be an interesting conversation.
Bonnie’s Blog of Crime: How Missing Children’s Day Came About. Bonnie Kernene, from the informative Bonnie’s Blog of Crime, is back with us; and we’re going to talk about the case that inspired Missing Children’s Day — the Etan Patz case. The FBI says there are 800,000 children reported missing each year and we need bloggers like Bonnie to shine a light on them and keep them in our line of sight.

Getting to the Truth: Lie Detectors–How Reliable Are They? The Agnes Bermudez Case: A Surprising Verdict. National Police Week: Honoring Those Killed in the Line of Duty
Lie Detectors: How Reliable Are They? Another piece in the puzzle of getting to the truth in the criminal justice system; I’ll be speaking about lie detectors (or polygraphs as they’re known officially) with experts John Fitzgerald and Karen Colonnello, of The Fitzgerald Group, who’ve worked on some very high profile cases here in the NY area. We’re going to talk about how reliable lie detectors really are in determining innocence or guilt…and how easy it is to “beat” the test!

The Agnes Bermudez Case: A Surprising Verdict. In 2008, 47-year old Wall Street trader Agnes Bermudez was accused of dousing her 32-year-old carpet cleaner ex-boyfriend, William Salazar, with flammable liquid in a jealous rage and setting him–and the building–on fire. Three other tenants in the building also died that day; and Bermudez, a beautiful woman, suffered severe, disfiguring burns to her face and upper body. She claimed self defense and, in 2010, I ALMOST served on the jury that eventually acquitted her. Tonight I’m speaking with attorney David McGruder who won that acquittal for her despite overwhelming negative publicity from the media AND a deathbed declaration by the victim about Bermudez’s guilt. I’m going to ask him what factors swayed the jury, despite the media trying the case and finding her guilty … AND why he didn’t pick me for the jury. I mean who wouldn’t want me on their jury!!
National Police Week: Remembering Our Fallen Heroes: According to Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), between 140 and 160 officers are killed in the line of duty every year, leaving their grieving families and police co-workers behind to cope with the loss. Next up, we’ll talk about National Police Week, a time of honoring and remembering those brave fallen officers with Craig Floyd, CEO of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which plays a major role in Police Week activities.

ENCORE PRESENTATION: April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, so this week I’m speaking with Child Abuse Education Advocate Erin Merryn, author of Stolen Innocence, who survived terrible childhood sexual abuse but has gone on to thrive and inspire others. She’s going to tell us about Erin’s Law*, which she’s trying to get passed in IL and then nationally, so young children will get the kind of information they need to protect themselves from sexual predators while in school.

- If You've Been a Victim of Crime, Know Your Rights - & - Electronic Pickpocketing: How to Protect Against It - & - Pepper Spray: Making Men Cry for Years: Air Date 4/06/11
Crime Victims Have Rights…One Listener’s Story. An email from a listener prompted the main topic for this week’s show. It told how knowing your rights if you’re a crime victim saved one man more than $100,000 in medical bills. Since April 10-16 is Crime Victims’ Rights Week, I knew I had to have her on the show, so tonight I’m speaking with Forensic Nurse Bridget Maybury about how she helped her brother navigate the NYS Victim Compensation Program. And, listen good, because all 50 states have similar programs!
Also available as a podcast on iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/CP101itunes
State Victim Compensation Programs. Then, I talk with Tina Stanford, Director of the NYS Office of Victim Services, the state department that oversees crime victim services. We’ll be speaking about how the New York State victim compensation program operates, what your rights are if you’re a crime victim and what you’re entitled to receive compensation for. Use this information to get an idea of what your own state might offer.
Electronic Pickpocketing. Next I talk with Identity Theft Prevention Specialist Paige Pederson, from LifeLock, about the new wrinkle in ID fraud–electronic pickpocketing. Now, an electronically-savvy thief only has to pass next to you to steal your credit card numbers! We’re going to speak about that this is and how to protect yourself from it.
Pepper Spray: Making Men Cry for Years. And, last up, find out how pepper spray, an extremely effective personal safety product, really does help deter crime! I’m speaking with Aimee Johnson from SaberRed, one of the best brands out there. Special Note: Buy the Pink Pepper Spray and a portion of the purchase price is donated to breast cancer research.

In order to raise awareness about this scourge, encourage prevention iniatives and let survivors know what services are available to aid them, April has been declared National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and I thought you and I should start to prepare for it with tonight’s show. So, I’m once again speaking with my buddies Rebecca Myles and Jaye Grayce from the Rape Declaration Forum radio show which airs on WBAI 95.5FM. And, you’ll hear, up close and personal, one of their show’s courageous callers describing her experience. Rebecca and Jaye told me it she was one of their most powerful callers yet.

- Catching a Serial Killer - & - Eye Witness Testimony: How Reliable Is It? - & - True Crime Blogs: Airdate 3/09/11
True Crime Blogs. Tonight we dip once more into the true crime blogosphere as I speak with Bonnie Kernene, from Bonnie’s Blog of Crime, to discuss some of the high profile cases everyone is buzzing about. I love Bonnie’s Blog because the posts are intelligent and well-thought out and very readable. Think you will too.
Catching a Serial Killer: Then I’m talking with Jeannie McDonough, whose heroic story is told in the new book, Caught in the Act: A Courageous Family’s Fight to Save Their Daughter from a Serial Killer, written by Paul Lonardo which was recently featured on CBS’s 48 Hours. This is an amazing story. On July 30, 2007, Chelmsford, MA residents Jeannie and Kevin McDonough were awakened at 4:00AM by strange noises coming from their 15-year-old daughter Shea’s bedroom. When they went to check on her, they discovered a hulking figure dressed in black hovering over her, holding a knife to her throat. The book tells the story what happened after that moment. Can’t wait for you to hear what they did!
Missed the live show? Available as a podcast and on iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/CP101itunes
Eye Witness Testimony: How Reliable Is It? Then I’m tackling the touchy subject of the reliability of eye witness testimony and how it can be manipulated and what can be done to make sure it’s dependable. I’ve got nationally-known expert on eye witness testimony Jennifer Dysart on the show to set the record straight on this … and wait ’til you hear about the gorilla in the room that no one saw! I was there and I still don’t believe this.
Personal Safety Product: The Storm Whistle. Lastly, I’ve got a great personal safety product to tell you about—the Storm Whistle, which is the loudest whistle in the world. They say it’s twice as loud as any whistle in the world, can be heard from 50 feet away through doors and walls and even under water. On their website, they cite a young couple who was being beaten and robbed whose struggle was overheard by a nearby homeowner. The homeowner blew the whistle WHILE INSIDE HER HOME and scared the muggers away. Neighborhood Watch programs anyone!!!

I’ve got nationally-known expert on eye witness testimony Jennifer Dysart on the show to set the record straight on this … and wait ’til you hear about the gorilla in the room that no one saw! I was there and I still don’t believe this. .

- True Crime Writers and Bloggers - & - Support for Homicide Survivors: Airdate 2/23/11 @ 8pm
Dennis Griffin: True Crime and Mob Writer. Many, many people are interested in true crime stories. We watch crime shows on TV and in the movies. We read about awful murders and missing persons cases, sympathize with the victims and maybe even try to solve some of the crimes ourselves. Kind of like a car wreck — we don’t want to see a tragedy but we can’t look away. It’s human nature!
Tonight, I’m interviewing one of the best crime writers around, Dennis Griffin, best-selling author of seven crime novels and four non-fiction true crime books, including Surviving the Mob: A Street Soldier’s Life in the Gambino Crime Family – the biography of mob informant Andrew DiDionato (who I interviewed on the show last week). I was so intrigued by the book I had to have Dennis on the show! He’s also got a radio show called Crime Wire on BlogTalkRadio that you should check out if you like good true crime discussions.

Dora Larson: Support for Homicide Survivors Organization. Since we’re talking about true crime cases on the show tonight, let’s not forget that for every homicide there are survivors: the mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, children, family, friends and colleagues of the victim. And, there’s no handbook to tell a survivor what to do after a homicide, who’ll be entering your life and what will be happening to you in the weeks, months and years ahead.
My second guest knows very intimately what that’s all about. Homicide survivor Dora Larson has spent almost thirty years helping others like herself and recently co-founded the Support for Homicide Survivors group to provide information, assistance and support for survivors of homicide and advocate for legislative changes that affect victims and their rights. She’s got an important story of survival and hope to tell.
Peter Hyatt: Statement Analyst and True Crime Blogger. Then, I’ll be speaking with “Statement Analyst” and well-known crime blogger Peter Hyatt to find out about what’s going on in the crime blogosphere. On his SeamusOreilly blog, he posts about the most infamous and high profile cases, including the Hailey Dunn and Cailey Anthony cases – and often causes much controversy with his opinions. He’s also the host of the Peter Hyatt Radio Show where he showcases the use of statement analysis in solving cases.
Personal Safety Product: iSafe Siren Backpack. And last but not least, I’ve got a great personal safety product to tell you about, the iSafe Siren Backpack invented by Chicago inventor Edric Sizemore. It’s a very attractive backpack that comes in a ranges of styles and colors and it’s equipped with a siren alarm and flashing lights to foil abductions, bullying attacks or even just getting lost in the mall.

- The Teen Dating Violence Epidemic - & - Surviving the Mob: Airdate - 2/09/11 @ 8pm eastern
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.
Surviving the Mob. For a change of pace, I start us off by speaking with infamous mob informant Andrew DiDonato, who began his career in the Mafia at the age of 17 and walked away from it in 1996 as a despised informant and fugitive. The story of his life is called Surviving the Mob: A Street Soldier’s Life in the Gambino Crime Family, co-authored with famous crime writer Dennis Griffin. It’s a fascinating but cautionary tale of the harsh realities of the life of a mob soldier who’s been marked for death, but — so far — has lived to tell the tale.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. The rate of date rape and dating violence among high school and college kids has skyrocketed nationwide and it’s time to stop downplaying the issue because the consequences affect not only the young victims but their families, friends, schools and communities. A recent study by the Liz Claiborne Foundation, which produced the free Love Is Not Abuse curriculum for schools, found that 1/3 of all teens have experienced physical, emotional or verbal abuse by a dating partner.
February has been designated Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and under this banner, organizations and individuals nationwide are calling attention to the devastation this abuse causes and to the directive that young people must be educated about unhealthy relationships and taught healthy relationship skills. On tonight’s show, I’m exploring this incredibly important issue with Cristina Escobar from the National Resource Center for Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.
Safe Dating Tips. I’ll also be speaking with safe dating coach Dari Dyrness-Olsen, author of Safe Dating for College Women, who is also NJ State Coordinator for the Love Is Not Abuse Teen Dating Violence Prevention Curriculum.
She recently testified before the New Jersey State Senate about the groundbreaking Safe Dating Law which would mandate the NJ Board of Education to address dating violence in the Health Curriculum at every level school of the NJ school system and develop dating violence training materials to be posted on its website.
Be sure to listen for the signs of dating violence every parent should know about and tips for how teens can get out of an abusive relationship safely.
- The Biggest Case of ID Theft in American History; The Biker Minister; and a Purr-sonal Safety Product You're Going to Love: Airdate 1/26/11
First up, I speak with reformed drug dealer Ron Kari, who’s now an actor (you can currently see him on the Sons of Anarchy TV show on FX), a sober companion body guard to the stars and a biker minister! We’re going to talk about his criminal past, his jailhouse religious conversion and his amazing prison “healing” ministries that have affected hundreds of hard core prisoners. It’s an intriguing story of drugs, bikes and the Holy Spirit. Don’t miss this one!

Next: Recently-convicted hacker Albert Gonzalez (known as Soupnazi, among other names) assembled a crew that was responsible for the theft of more than 130 million credit and debit card numbers–the largest case of identity theft in American history–all the while working as a government informant! And, the government says that the full extent of his thefts is still unknown to them because the case is still unraveling. Tonight, I’m speaking with Identity theft prevention specialist Paige Pederson, from the LifeLock company, about this shocking case and it’s implications for all of us.
Last up, in observance of Personal Safety Awareness Month, I speak with actress/stuntwoman/self defense teacher Spice Williams-Crosby about a really neat purr-sonal safety device — the Kitty Kat Key Guard – you’re absolutely going to love. We’ve got some simple self defense tips for you and you can find many more on her website www.ifightformylife.com as well as on her highly informative I FIGHT FOR MY LIFE! web TV show.
- WATCHing the Courts - & - Bullied for Religion - & - Convict Comedian: Airdate 11/10/10
WATCHing the Courts: After my experience almost serving on jury duty this past summer, I’m convinced that public scrutiny of the courts is essential to ensure fairness and put a spotlight on racial, cultural or gender bias.
Court monitoring groups exist all over the country to keep a watchful eye and create an informed and involved public, so I thought that this week I’d talk about this. I’ll be interviewing Marna Anderson, Executive Director of the WATCH monitoring program in Minneapolis, MN, about what’s involved in court monitoring. Find out how you can get involved or start your own program.

Bullied Because of Religion: Next, I take another look at bullying; this week from the perspective of people who are bullied because of their religion.
Religious attacks and religious bullying is a pertinent issue in NYC, particularly, right now because of a controversial proposal to build an Islamic cultural center and mosque in the shadow of Ground Zero; but this kind of bullying exists all over the country. I’m speaking with NYC Councilwoman Helen Diane Foster and a member of her African Muslim Teen Council about the problem and what’s being done about it here in NYC.
Convict Comedian: speak with career criminal Felon O’Reilly (yes, that’s a stage name), who was arrested 73 times, incarcerated 7 times and who’s now doing standup comedy routines at correctional facilities and drug treatment programs all over the country. He’s extremely funny and very poignant and brings a message of hope that a life of crime can be turned around – mixed in with the humor. Laugh a little with us this week!
- Hero Cop - & - Help for Bullying Victims - & - Stop the Use of Rape as a Tactic of War -- 10/27/10
Kathy Burke — Hero Cop
Starting off the show, I’m speaking with hero NYPD detective Kathy Burke, who, though barely 5’2″ tall, joined the force in 1968 when only 1% of the police department was female; served 23 yearsand became one of its most highly decorated detectives.
Her autobiography, hopefully soon to be made into a movie, Detective: The Inspirational Story of the Trailblazing Woman Cop Who Wouldn’t Quit chronicles her career in some of the NYPD’s most elite units; how she survived a shootout while working undercover on a drug bust during which she was gravely wounded and her partner was killed; and how she then doggedly pursued his killers for three years through the criminal justice system to an unsatisfactory and controversial end. Today, she’s thriving though and helping other traumatized police officers do the same. You’ve got to hear this fascinating, inspiring story.

The tragic suicide of NJ bullying victim Tyler Clementi brings the focus of the show to Bullying Prevention Awareness Month; so this week, I’m speaking with Irene van der Zande, Director of the international self defense organization, Kidpower, about their new bullying prevention book: How to Stop Bullying and Harassment: Skills For Protecting Children, Teens and Adults. You’re going to want to run right out and buy it.
Rape as a Tactic of War: UNIFEM’s Iniatives to End Violence Against Women Worldwide
Then I shift gears to speak about the use of rape as a tactic of war with Cheryl Benton, President of the NY Metro Chapter of the US National Committee for UNIFEM, which is part of UN Women.
Find out what UNIFEM is doing about this horrific situation, which has affected hundreds of thousands of women and girls, and it’s iniatives to end violence against women all over the world. And, find out how YOU can get involved in the effort too!
We’re loaded with woman-power this week…and it’d be a crime NOT to listen!
- Crime Prevention with McGruff the Crime Dog - & - Financial Literacy for Domestic Violence Victims Air Date - 10/13/10
Crime Prevention with McGruff the Crime Dog
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month AND Crime Prevention Awareness Month, so this week, I’m speaking with the National Crime Prevention Council about the “new look” for McGruff the Crime Dog (you heard it here first, folks!) and their campaign for Crime Prevention Awareness Month. Financial Literacy for Domestic Violence Survivors
Next, I talk about financial empowerment for domestic violence survivors with guests David Anderson of the national financial literacy program WI$E and financial planner Anja Luesk, co-chair of the Pro Bono Division of the NY Chapter of the National Financial Planning Association and Denise Allen, a survivor who’s gone on to thrive and now helps others design survival strategies.
This is a critical topic where domestic violence and abuse is concerned, because it’s almost impossible for someone to even CONTEMPLATE leaving an abusive relationship–or not returning to their abuser as so many do–if they don’t have the economic resources to survive on their own and take care of their family. Got lots of great information and resources for you in this segment!
Empire Gives Back: Beauty Salons Against Domestic Abuse
Finally, back again for the third year, are my friends from the Empire Beauty Group, a supporter of the awesome CUT IT OUT: Salons Against Domestic Abuse Program through which hairdressers are trained to spot the signs of domestic violence in their clientele and how to help.
We’re also going to be talking about the Empire Gives Back Program and some of the wonderful things their instructors and operators are doing at shelters and other domestic violence programs.

- Flight Attendants On the Front Line to Spot Human Trafficking - Air Date 9/29/10
Such a simple idea: flight attendants who are trained to recognize signs of the horrific crime of human trafficking on international and domestic flights. I mean, who better to serve as the eyes and ears of homeland security than airline personnel!
Back in May, 2010, I first talked about the work of American Airlines flight attendant Sandra Fiorini, who, in conjunction with Deborah Sigmund from Innocents at Risk, had been informally raising awareness among her fellow flight attendants to this ever growing problem. Since then, due to their efforts, and with assistance from Nancy Rivard from the Airline Ambassadors International humanitarian aid organization, American has stepped up to the plate and will be offering this training to all its flight attendants. You’re going to be inspired by this story and I can’t wait to have them back to talk about this and other exciting developments.

Hot town, summer in the city; back of my neck getting dirty and gritty…Perfect weather for going to the beach or just curling up somewhere in the shade with something great to read. They all sound so interesting.

- Trial By Jury: In Search of the Truth! Air Date: 6/24/10
Have you ever heard a verdict in a case that left you scratching your head and asking where did they find the bunch of idiots who were on THAT jury? Rapists set free! Murderers sentenced to only a few years in prison! An award of millions simply for being burnt by hot coffee!
Well, I’m done scratching my head. Got my first real glimpse of the jury selection process a few weeks ago and have a much better understanding of how these seemingly insane decisions can happen. In fact, NOW I’m wondering how any jury actually makes what I consider to be the right decision! To help me figure all this out, I’m speaking with Dr. Kathy Kellermann, a nationally-known trial consultant and an expert on jury profiling. We’ll be talking about the effectiveness of the jury system, what attorneys look for when selecting jurors and what factors sway juries one way or the other.

I’ll be telling my jury duty story too–about not being picked for what would’ve been a very spicy murder case. How could they not have wanted me???
Our True Crime Report features horror film maker and Renaissance man Hart D. Fisher, who blogs on the True Crime site InColdBlog, back for a second appearance. We’re talking about his upcoming book–the story of a hardened gangbanger who’s turning his life around and how he’s doing it. We like that!!

- Air Date: 6/17/10-Independence vs. Safety: A Delicate Balancing Act For Kids & Parents
If you have young children, what are the scariest decisions you’ll ever have to make? I believe it’s those decisions that involve balancing your children’s need for independence and freedom with concerns about their personal safety and well being.
A new childrearing philosophy that’s gaining followers describes today’s typical parents as invasive helicopters, always hovering about their kids, or as snowplows, trying to remove all obstacles from the path to adulthood, and states that kids are being smothered by concerns about germs, diseases, childhood injuries and what’s been termed as really remote personal safety dangers. This last part really gives me pause.
Tonight, I’m speaking with Irene van der Zande, co-founder of the worldwide self defense organization, Kidpower, who says that reasonable precautions AND self defense skills empower children and provide them with the tools to enjoy their lives and not live an unnecessarily restricted, neurotic and fearful existence. Plus, she’s got great tips for parents on what to teach your children about personal safety.

- Hollering Back Against Street Harassment: What It Is and Some Simple Things We Can Do About It! Air Date: 6/10/10
It doesn’t just occur when women pass by a construction site or a group of men hanging out in front of a store. Simply by being in ANY public place, women can be subjected to behavior that ranges from the merely annoying (catcalls, whistles, references to body parts) to the downright terrifying (public exposure, public masturbation, threats of rape). It’s called street harassment and it happens pretty much all over the world.
This week, I’m interviewing national street harassment expert Holly Kearl, author of the upcoming book Stop Street Harassment: Making Public Places Safe and Welcoming for Women for a definitive look at this problem. She runs the website Stop Street Harassment and the companion blog where people from around the world submit their street harassment stories and where she discusses street harassment incidents that make the news.

You’ll also learn some awareness and prevention skills and simple verbal responses to street harassment that’ll increase your chances of staying safe in these situations, when I speak with self defense instructor Lauren Taylor, from Defend Yourself, who’s also based in Washington, DC.

In New York State (and too many others as well), compressing someone’s neck and cutting off air flow (i.e. choking them) is not considered an assault unless there’s evidence that the victim suffered physical injury. In fact, the choker is often only charged with harassment and isn’t even arrested.
This week, I’m discussing the so-called “Choking Loophole” in the law with crusading DA Charles Hynes from Brooklyn, NY and Warren County DA Kathleen Hogan, who’s also President of the NYS District Attorneys Association…and the bill that’s been introduced in the NYS Legislature to close the holes. If your state also has this loophole, you don’t want to miss this show.

- 5/20/10: Bullying: A Different Approach to Prevent It -- Upcoming Crime Prevention 101 Radio Show
On January 14, an attractive, vibrant 15-year-old named Phoebe Prince was found hanging in the stairwell of her house — the result of repeated verbal taunts, cyber bullying and physical threats from several of her high school classmates in the small New England town of South Hadley, MA.
This week, I’ll be talking more about the topic of bullying with school psychologist and psychotherapist Israel Kalman, from Bullies to Buddies, about his unusual but highly successful bully-prevention methods.
Kalman also says it’s not a school’s fault if there’s bullying in the school; and, in a recent blog article for Psychology Today, he even supported the efforts of the much-maligned high school in South Hadley, MA where Phoebe Prince attended. Can’t wait to hear what he has to say on this topic!

- 11/19/09: Crime Prevention 101 Child Abuse Panel Discussion
This week, I moderate our first ever panel discussion format – on the subject of child abuse from the perspective of the legal system, the medical profession, the schools and the family.
My expert panelists are Jill Starishevsky, Assistant District Attorney and author of My Body Belongs to Me, Dr. Ingrid Walker-Descartes, attending pediatrician and child abuse specialist at the distinguished Maimonedes Infants and Children’s Hospital in NY, and Connie Hammer, school social worker and founder of The Progressive Parent.

- 10/29/09: Domestic Violence and Desperate Acts: Interview with Lorena Bobbitt
Back in June, 1993, 16 years ago, headlines all over the world were focused on pretty much one thing: the seemingly unbelievable story of a woman who had cut off her husband’s penis and thrown it out of the window of her car into a field beside the highway, only to have it found by the police and reattached by doctors. If you were like most people, you were absolutely stunned.
This week, Crime Prevention Specialist Susan Bartelstone talks with Lorena Bobbitt, the perpetrator of this act, about what led a shy, frail-looking woman to do what she did. Lorena talks frankly about what happened to her in the aftermath of the sensational trial including her recent televised reunion with her former husband John Wayne Bobbitt in 2008; and what brought her out of hiding after all this time. Don’t miss this fascinating story of domestic violence and desperate acts.
- 10/15/09: Healing From Trauma Using the EFT Technique & The Alcohol–Rape Connection
Two thought-provoking topics today: Alternative healing techniques and the connection between alcohol and rape.
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), known as tapping, is most closely analogous to ancient Chinese meridian healing systems—except that it’s designed to aid in the relief of both physical pain AND deep emotional trauma; and there’s an impressive amount of anecdotal evidence from thousands of people, including children, who’ve experienced relief using this method. Crime Prevention Specialist Susan Bartelstone interviews EFT Practitioner Sophia Cayer about this non-traditional technique.
Then she’ll be speaking with provocative writer/anti-rape activist Jaclyn Friedman whose body of work has become a popular reference for new thinking about preventing rape without shaming or blaming the victim. The conversation starts with the drinking and rape link and then anything else that comes up…from the Chris Brown case, Miley Cyrus, the rape culture and who knows where we’ll land. For resources mentioned in the show, see 10/15/09 on the Radio Links page.
- 10/08/09: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Time to Recommit to Ending the Violence
It’s a good bet that domestic violence will touch the life of every single American, of every circumstance, at some point in their lifetime; and it will leave a devastating impact on the women, men, children, relatives, friends, co-workers and even clergy involved.
Though men are victims too, it is women who are it’s primary target; and it’s been estimated that each year in the United States, 4 million women will suffer abuse from their husband, ex-husbands, boyfriends, domestic partners, same sex partners or whatever. And, it’s not just happening locally, it’s been called a worldwide social epidemic.
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time recommit to ending violence within our homes, our communities and our country, and where ever in the world we can reach.
This week, Crime Prevention Specialist Susan Bartelstone speaks with a whole gaggle of guests, showcasing two NYC organizations and two national organizations that are making a real difference in the fight against this epidemic :
- Karen Karpowich, President of the New York Women’s Agenda, a coalition of 100 diverse women’s groups and organizations dedicated to women’s empowerment ;
- Sister Mary Nerney, from STEPS to End Violence, who works with women incarcerated for killing their abusive partners;
- Maureen Pinchock from the Empire Education Group chain of cosmetology schools, and the Empire Gives Back project which supports CUT IT OUT, a national program that teaches hair salon professionals to recognize signs of domestic abuse in their clients and safely refer them to local community resources; and
- Wanda Lucibell, Chief of the Special Victims Unit of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, which is part of the Brooklyn Family Justice Center, the first FJC in New York City, which has handled thousands of domestic violence cases since it’s inception.
Listen and be inspired.

- 10/1/09: Every Sex Offender Lives in Someone's Neighborhood: Ways to Keep YOURS Safe
Every predator, every abuser, every criminal and even every potential terrorist lives in somebody’s neighborhood. That’s a true but scary thought.
One of the myriad of shocking aspects of the Jaycee Dugard case is that this young girl (and her two children) lived in the backyard of her abductors for 18 years in a series of ugly, ramshackle tents and shacks—right under the eyes of the whole neighborhood. Yet very little was done by any of them.
This week, I’m speaking with Neighborhood Safety Specialist Stephanie Mann from Safe Kids Now and Maureen Kanka of the Megan Nicole Kanka Foundation (Megan’s Law) about what the neighbors could have done, how to organize your neighborhood and ways to keep your neighborhood safe from sexual predators as well as your garden variety criminals.

- 9/24/09: What Happens After a Sexual Assault?
What happens when a sexual assault survivor goes to a hospital emergency room after an attack? It is essential to have trained professionals in hospital emergency rooms who have experience dealing with sexual violence victims to ensure that they receive the best care possible, while also ensuring that proper procedures are followed to assist law enforcement with the investigation of the assault; otherwise the experience can be just as traumatic as the assault itself. This week, Crime Prevention Specialist Susan Bartelstone talks with Dr. Sultan Torshkhoev and Amy Edelstein from the NYC Alliance Against Sexual Assault’s SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examinar) Preceptorship training program, which has been at the forefront of developing new leaders and steering policies and procedures throughout New York City. This is a model program that can be replicated all over the country and a show you’ll want to save.
